HD DVD Players at Consumersearch dot com

HD DVD is the second competing high-definition format. High-def HD DVD movies on HD DVD players look just as great as Blu-ray, and reviewers say there's just no way to tell which format will ultimately win. That means buying one player or the other is a 50/50 bet for now.

If you choose HD DVD player over Blu-ray, critics say the top-rated model is the Toshiba HD-XA2. What really sets the HD-XA2 apart is that it’s a tremendous standard definition performer -- playing standard DVDs better than the PS3. If you have a big collection of regular DVDs, that might swing your vote. Audio performance is also excellent.

High definition disc players are becoming more affordable, and the Toshiba HD-A2's price has dropped to the point where it could be a serious alternative to a basic DVD player (for those who own HDTVs). The biggest compromise is that the maximum output resolution is 1080i instead of 1080p. Still, HD performance is first rate. Performance with standard DVDs is good, but not the best. Reviews say that the HD-A2 is generally easy to use.
